CME/CE Information
Target Audience
This activity is intended for neurologists, primary care providers, nursing professionals,
physician assistants, rehabilitation specialists, mental health professionals, and
other healthcare providers involved in the treatment of MS.
|
|
Activity Purpose
The purpose of this activity is to address the practitioner and patient barriers
in the optimal management of MS-related symptoms, and to identify best practices
in employing treatments for complex patient cases.
|
|
Statement of Need
Disease progression, severity of disease course, and occurrence of specific symptoms
in multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disorder of the brain and spinal cord,
are unpredictable and vary from person to person. The symptoms of MS and its treatment
have significant consequences on all aspects of life, from physiologic to daily
function. Treatment of MS-related symptoms is a complex, individualized process
and the development of universally-agreed upon quality measures or guidelines has
proved extremely difficult. Therefore, clinicians treating patients with MS need
expert recommendations and guidance from MS specialists to differentiate symptomatic
care from disease management, and reduce the risk of worsening disease due to secondary
complications.
|
|
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will
- Apply screening and assessment tools to determine risk in patients who are likely
to suffer from MS-related symptoms
- Analyze and implement evidence-based therapeutic interventions designed to prevent
disability and improve quality of life in patients with MS
- Evaluate the efficacy of nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment approaches
for symptom management
- Formulate and monitor treatment strategies for MS symptoms based on patient characteristics
and preferences
